This penthouse is the highest residence in San Francisco. Designed in the 1960s, it retained the original architecture. Our clients hoped to mask much of the paneling with paint and ersatz details. We asked that they reconsider, and suggested a restoration, knowing it was a historically important interior and an interesting starting point for the decoration.
The goal was to decorate the rooms in a way that was comfortable and in keeping with the client's need of a pied-a-terre while suggesting the original decoration. At the time, restoring an interior from the 1960’s was a radical idea— the modern decoration of that time was not as celebrated as today, so more often than not, it was disguised or destroyed.
Period upholstery forms were reproduced in workrooms that made the original models. The whole was brought very much into the present with new art works, including the large drawings by Andy Goldsworthy.
