The homeowner lived in the house only one summer before completing the remodeling. Environmental ordinances stipulated that the architect work from the original footprint, “which ended up being an asset,” says Jayne. “Sometimes architects want to start with regular plans. But having to deal with the original footprint made the architecture more irregular” – and more in the vernacular of a shingle-style beach house. Its quirkiness gave it authenticity. Jayne and Pennoyer added the rest.
