Jayne enhanced the smooth flow by repeating the sunny colors of the living room in the adjoining sitting room, using the same throw pillows and cheerful striped fabric on the custom-made sofas. He toned things down a bit with a simple sea grass rug bound in leather, and he hung similar curtains in both rooms “to balance the amount of decoration, so that each room would have something of equal beauty.”

The window treatments Jayne chose are a refreshing departure from gauzy curtains typically found in summer houses. In the sitting room, the curtains hang from coral-painted wooden rings on white rods and are embroidered and appliquéd with a design from an 18 th -century pattern book. “We wanted to punch up the embroidery because the room is so big,” Jayne says, “so we relied on the appliqués.” The curtains in the living room are trimmed with fringe rather than embroidery.

The decorator continued to add character to the house by painting the walls of the library to resemble pint paneling and by painting the shelves of the bookcases green for a summery touch.
