When a Dallas-based client of decorator Thomas Jayne's purchased summerhouse on Long Island , the house had two things going for it: the front view and the back view. The back faced the dunes and the Atlantic Ocean beyond them; the front faced Mecox Bay . But the house itself was a bit of a mess. An uninspired ‘70s split-level, it had been added onto many times, always in little increments. “It was in a beautiful place, “ says architect Peter Pennoyer, who worked with Jayne on the substantial renovation, “but it had a confused plan.” Because of the many additions, there was not real flow, but worse, the design didn't take advantage of the site. The house's only real attributes—the marvelous vistas – were all but obscured. |
